LATEST BUZZ:

REP THEATER

Max Shippee & Marco Antonio Garcia recently founded Rep Theater, an endeavor born of their mutual love for writing & drama—& lifting weights. A return to the black box, RT recently put up its first show, Three Plays for Time, a series of one acts, in the gym space of 1440 Athletics & Fitness in Lomita, CA. In it’s theatrical incarnation, the space welcomed a sold-out audience of 100 people. Garcia directed Alexis Maron, Dash Porter, Derek Rubiano, Marc Ryan, & Max Shippee in “Sure Thing” by David Ives, “Waiting” by Ethan Coen, & in an original piece by Garcia, “Destiny Turns on the Radio.”

The small space was an intimate experience that transported the audience to the 1940’s and the subtly connected stories through acting that was humorous, nuanced, and intelligently paced.

Congratulations to Rep Theater for its first of hopefully many more shows!

MAX in this moment

How would you describe this moment in your life right now?

Currently trying to embrace the full creative bug. I’ve spent a lot of years looking for permission to create, and finally realized that writing is a real way to create that you don’t need someone’s permission to do. My life isn’t perfect, and I’m working on that.

What phase of life are you in, & how do you think your age affects your thoughts, your feelings, your decisions?

Ahem… let’s say that my years of experience have for sure changed the way I see the world. I like to still think that I’m that happy guy I was as a teen, but more responsibilities, as well as life lived, for sure add to the flavor that is me.  I’d say this is a time in my life for both deepening and for truth. Deepening in the way that I want to interact with people and truth in that I’m searching for things that are universal, and things that are both true in the moment, and for the long run.

What have you been working on / playing with / scheming this last week?

This last week I’ve been away from the family and am shooting an indie film. It’s a really great part that feels the most natural I’ve ever played something, so that’s very, very refreshing. Also trying to get in a little more editing on the book that I’m working on.

If you were to use only three words to describe your current creations, what would they be?

Truth in process.

What early experience or influence on you is still very much alive for you today in your way of living or in your work?

I’m really a country boy at heart in a lot of ways. I still have a longing to be able to live by a lake with a few friendly neighbors and start my day with a canoe paddle. There’s something about the city for me that is more… well, more dopamine instead of serotonin. I’m trying to find a way to embrace both at the appropriate time. So I’d say my childhood, or at least some longings from my childhood are still there.

What is something you’re trying to let go of right now, & how is that going?

Wow… judgment I guess? It’s funny how you tell your kids, “Don’t worry about other people judging you… Just be yourself!” And then you head out into the world and realize just how much you're holding back. I’m trying to find a way to let go of that without being socially inappropriate. So… that’s, I guess, a work in progress.

What’s the last thing you thought of before you went to bed last night?

I was running lines for the movie, so yeah, the current work.

The first thing you thought of upon waking this morning?

My right achilles was tight… it’s been a little thing lately, so as I woke up, I tried to flex by toes towards my shin to get a little stretch before my feet hit the floor.
